Project 12.
12 kids. 12 rooms. 12 months.
I’m the founder of Project 12, a pay-it-forward initiative to help bring some sunshine to the lives of school-aged children, with personalised room makeovers. The idea for Project 12 emerged when I saw how excited my daughter was when I updated her bedroom with new ‘big girl’ stuff. What struck me the most about the makeover was how much it changed her sense of belonging. The emotional benefits of having her own personal space to play, read or hide her ‘kid valuables’ in proved very significant.
Psychology studies continue to prove that creating a space of belonging to a child is critical to their development, as a setting reinforces and supports their own sense of identity and ways of being in the world. The effects of a lack of this belonging is largely unseen until they grow up.
But not all families have the means to create these spaces, so Project 12 was born out of a genuine desire to make a difference to the lives of these children. Many children are missing out on this fundamental need, not to mention the by-product of experiencing this seemingly simple pleasure, just because of their circumstances.
The response to Project 12 so far has been overwhelming. We have been lucky to team up with 2 wonderful charity organisations who work to support & re-home families in need and find homes for foster children across the country. And aside from some old-fashioned fund raising & donation initiatives, we are gratefully supported by some of Australia’s largest retailers who have offered their products for the makeovers.
Every cent and product donated goes directly to the kids we help.
